Beyond the Candy Wrapper: Why Muslims Don’t Celebrate Halloween—And Why Moses & Jesus Wouldn’t Either
Society asks why Muslims sit out October 31st. History asks a much bigger question: How did the rest of the world forget what all three Abrahamic faiths originally forbade?
Every October, neighborhoods across the Western world transform into an open-air theater of the macabre. Lawns are dressed with faux tombstones, skeletons hang from porch lights, retail aisles overflow with chocolate, and a familiar question inevitably surfaces in classrooms and workplaces:
“What’s the big deal? It’s just costumes and free candy—why are Muslims so strict about Halloween?”
To the modern consumer, opting out of Halloween looks like overthinking a harmless autumn pastime. The narrative is framed as if Muslims are the historical outliers—the sole community stubbornly refusing to join a universal human party.
Here is the plot twist that modern culture rarely talks about: Muslims are not the outliers. If you open the foundational scriptures of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, you will discover that all three Abrahamic faiths explicitly condemn the exact roots, symbols, and rituals upon which Halloween was built. The real story isn’t why Muslims refuse to celebrate Halloween—it’s why Islam is the last global stronghold still holding the line that Abraham, Moses, and Jesus (peace be upon them all) drew in the sand thousands of years ago.
Unmasking Samhain: You Cannot Sanitize a Pagan Root
A tree is defined by its roots, even if you hang plastic superhero capes on its branches. Secular historians and encyclopedias unanimously trace Halloween back to Samhain (pronounced sow-in), an ancient Celtic polytheistic festival marking the end of the harvest and the onset of the “dark half” of the year.
To the ancient Celts, October 31st was the night the veil between the living and the dead ruptured. They believed spirits of the dead and malevolent entities roamed the earth. Every single “innocent” Halloween tradition today is a direct ritual reenactment of ancient pagan fear:
- Wearing Costumes & Masks: Originally worn as spiritual camouflage so roaming demons and ghosts would mistake humans for fellow spirits and leave them unharmed.
- “Trick or Treat”: Derived from leaving food and livestock offerings at the doorstep to appease wandering spirits—so they wouldn’t curse (“trick”) the household or its crops.
- Jack-o’-Lanterns: Originally hollowed-out turnips carved with grotesque faces and lit with embers from sacred Druidic bonfires to ward off evil spirits.
- Bobbing for Apples & Party Games: Rooted directly in ancient divination and fortune-telling rituals used to predict marriage and death.
Repackaging ancient polytheistic spirit-appeasement in high-fructose corn syrup and Hollywood branding does not change its DNA. And when we hold that DNA up to the mirror of the Abrahamic scriptures, the verdict is unanimous.
The Three Abrahamic Faiths: One Unbroken Verdict
Let’s lay the cards on the table. What do the scriptures associated with Judaism, Christianity, and Islam actually say about imitating pagan festivals, flirting with the occult, and normalizing darkness?
Strict Prohibition of Chukkat HaGoyim & Necromancy
In Orthodox Judaism, celebrating Halloween is strictly forbidden under the biblical law of Chukkat HaGoyim (Leviticus 18:3)—the prohibition against walking in the statutes and pagan customs of idolatrous nations. Furthermore, the Torah explicitly condemns the exact themes celebrated on October 31st:
“When you enter the land… do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.”
— Deuteronomy 18:9–12
“What Fellowship Has Light With Darkness?”
Early followers of Jesus (peace be upon him) detested pagan festivals. The New Testament repeatedly warns against pharmakeia (sorcery/witchcraft) in Galatians 5:20 and issues a stinging command regarding dark rituals:
“Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” (Ephesians 5:11)
“What fellowship has light with darkness? … You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.” (2 Corinthians 6:14 / 1 Corinthians 10:21)
So how did Halloween enter the Christian world? Through compromise. In the 9th century, Pope Gregory IV moved “All Saints’ Day” (All Hallows’ Day) to November 1st in an attempt to absorb and Christianize the Celtic pagan festival of Samhain on October 31st (All Hallows’ Eve). History proved a devastating lesson: when you mix revelation with paganism to make religion popular, paganism doesn’t become holy—the holy gets swallowed by the pagan.
The Unbroken Shield of Tawhid (Pure Monotheism)
Islam did not come to invent a new religion; it came to restore the pure, uncompromising monotheism of Abraham (Millat Ibrahim)—and to lock the door against the exact syncretism that diluted previous nations. In the Quran, the unseen world (Al-Ghayb) belongs exclusively to God. Dead souls do not roam the streets; they rest in Barzakh until the Day of Judgment. Sorcery (Sihr) and occultism are exposed as spiritual poison:
“And they learned what harmed them and did not benefit them…” — Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah (2:102)
“Say: Truly, my Lord has guided me to a straight path—a right religion, the way of Abraham, the pure monotheist, and he was not among those who associate partners with God.” — Quran, Surah Al-An’am (6:161)
Every single day, Muslims recite Surah Al-Falaq (Quran 113), seeking refuge in the Lord of Daybreak from the evil of darkness and those who practice witchcraft. A believer cannot seek refuge from darkness in prayer at dawn, and then dress their children up in its symbols for entertainment at dusk.
Why Islam Refuses the “Harmless Fun” Compromise
Notice how paganism crept into earlier civilizations: it never arrived announcing, “Abandon God and worship darkness!” It arrived saying, “Relax, keep your faith in your heart—just join the local festival for the kids and the community.” Within three generations, the compromises of the parents became the creed of the grandchildren.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) erected an impenetrable firewall around Islamic identity with a single prophetic statement:
“Whoever imitates a people is one of them.”
— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Sunan Abi Dawud)
And instead of leaving believers in a cultural vacuum, Islam replaced superstition-based carnivals with two divinely ordained celebrations: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Look at the contrast in spiritual architecture:
Pause and Ask Yourself: What Kind of Book Produces This Level of Conviction?
Think about what you just read. We live in an era where multibillion-dollar corporations dictate human behavior, where nearly every cultural and religious boundary has been flattened, commercialized, and sold back to the public in plastic packaging.
The Torah warned against pagan customs. The New Testament warned against fellowship with darkness. Yet over the centuries, cultural pressure bent society into turning a blind eye. Except for one community.
Why are Muslims—from London to New York, from Tokyo to Cairo—still holding the exact monotheistic line of Abraham, Moses, and Jesus without flinching?
It isn’t because Muslims hate fun. It’s because Muslims possess a living, unaltered scripture—The Quran—that has not had a single word edited, watered down, or negotiated away for cultural popularity in over 1,400 years. It speaks with an authority so direct, so rational, and so spiritually piercing that it frees human beings from the need to bow to peer pressure.
If a book can give ordinary families the courage to smile warmly at their neighbors while standing completely unshaken against a multi-billion-dollar cultural tidal wave over a single night in October… have you ever wondered what else that book says about the purpose of your life, the nature of God, and what awaits beyond death?
