What is Islam?
The 5 Pillars of Islam
Islam means “submission to the will of Allah (God).” It’s built on five core pillars:
Shahadah (Decleration)
The Shahadah is the foundation of Islam. It’s a simple yet profound statement: “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger.” This declaration affirms the oneness of Allah (Tawheed) and the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him). It’s the first step to becoming a Muslim and a constant reminder of our purpose in life—to worship Allah alone.
“Allah witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and the angels and those of knowledge also witness this.”
Quran 3:18
Salah (Prayer)
Salah is the daily prayer performed five times a day, connecting Muslims directly with Allah. It’s a moment of peace, reflection, and gratitude amidst the chaos of life. Whether it’s Fajr at dawn or Isha at night, each prayer is a chance to recharge spiritually.
“Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.”
Quran 20:14
Sawm (Fasting)
Fasting during the month of Ramadan is a spiritual detox. From dawn to sunset, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs to focus on self-discipline, empathy for the less fortunate, and drawing closer to Allah. It’s a month of reflection, gratitude, and community.
“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.”
Quran 2:183
Hajj (Pilgrimage)
Hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca, required once in a lifetime for those who are physically and financially able. It’s a journey of a lifetime, where millions of Muslims from around the world gather to worship Allah, dressed in simple white garments to symbolise equality and unity.
“And Hajj to the House is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, for those who are able to undertake it.”
Quran 3:97:
Zakat (Charity)
Zakat is the act of giving a portion of your wealth (2.5%) to those in need. It’s not just charity—it’s a purification of your wealth and a way to foster community solidarity. By giving, we acknowledge that everything we have is a blessing from Allah.
“O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from what We have produced for you from the earth.”
Quran 2:267
Did You Know?
Did you know? The word “Islam” comes from the same root as “salaam,” which means peace. So, Islam is all about finding peace through submission to Allah.
Who Is Allah?
Allah is the One and Only God, the Creator of everything in the universe. He is eternal, without beginning or end, and everything depends on Him, while He depends on nothing. Allah is Merciful, Just, and Loving, with 99 beautiful names (Asma ul-Husna) that describe His attributes, such as Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful) and Al-Hakeem (The All-Wise). He is closer to us than our jugular vein (Quran 50:16), yet His greatness is beyond human comprehension. Allah has no partners, no children, and no equals—He is unique and unlike anything we can imagine.
“Say, ‘He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.'” Quran 112:1-4
“Allah is Merciful, Just, and Loving. He is closer to us than our jugular vein” Quran 50:16
Who is Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)?
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the final messenger of Allah, sent to guide humanity to the truth. Born in Mecca in 570 CE, he was known for his honesty and integrity, earning the title Al-Amin (the Trustworthy) even before receiving revelation. At age 40, he was chosen by Allah to deliver the Quran, the final divine message. His life was a perfect example of compassion, patience, and justice—whether he was comforting the poor, standing up for the oppressed, or forgiving his enemies. He taught humanity how to worship Allah, live with purpose, and build a just society.
“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day.” Quran 33:21
He taught kindness, justice, and humility. Even his enemies described him as “truthful and trustworthy.”
What is the Quran?
The Quran is the literal word of Allah, revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over 23 years through the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel). It is the final divine book, a guide for all of humanity, covering everything from faith and worship to morality, law, and even science. The Quran is unique because it has been preserved in its original Arabic text, unchanged since its revelation over 1,400 years ago. It’s not just a book to read—it’s a book to live by, offering wisdom, comfort, and guidance for every aspect of life.
“This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.‘” Quran 2:2
