Angels and Jinn: The Unseen Creations
Discovering the Hidden World in Islam
Beyond the physical world we can see, touch, and measure, Islam teaches the profound reality of the unseen (Al-Ghayb). While human beings are created from clay and bound to the earthly realm, Allah has created other magnificent, intelligent beings that exist alongside us.
Understanding the unseen—specifically the Angels and the Jinn—is a core component of Islamic faith. It explains the mechanics of the universe, the spiritual battles we face daily, and the ultimate justice of the Creator.
The Angels (Mala’ikah)
Angels are noble, majestic creations of Allah, brought into existence from pure light long before the creation of human beings. Unlike humans and Jinn, angels do not have free will. They are not capable of sin, arrogance, or disobedience. Instead, they exist in a constant, beautiful state of worship, perfectly executing whatever Allah commands them to do.
Their Extraordinary Roles
Angels govern various physical and spiritual mechanisms of the universe by Allah’s permission:
- Recorders of Deeds: Noble angels are assigned to every single human being, tirelessly recording every word spoken and action taken, formulating the exact record that will be presented on Judgement Day.
- In the Heavens & Earth: They carry out monumental tasks, ranging from managing the weather and the affairs of the universe, to guarding the gates of Paradise and Hell.
- In the Grave: Specific angels (Munkar and Nakir) visit the deceased immediately in their graves to question them about their Lord, their religion, and their Prophet.
- Judgement Day: They will descend in glorious ranks to witness the final reckoning, assist in the distribution of records, and respectfully escort people to their eternal abodes.
“They do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.” (Quran 66:6)
“And indeed, [appointed] over you are keepers, Noble and recording; They know whatever you do.” (Quran 82:10-12)
The Jinn
The Jinn are an entirely different creation of Allah, existing completely parallel to humanity. While we are made from clay, the Jinn were created from a smokeless flame of fire. They live on Earth with us—they have communities, they eat, they marry, and they die—but they are veiled from our ordinary sight.
Crucially, unlike angels, Jinn possess free will, exactly like human beings. This means they can consciously choose to believe or disbelieve, to be righteous or to be corrupt. Because they have this gift of free will, they will also be resurrected and held fully accountable for their actions on Judgement Day.
Iblis and the Origin of Satan
Many people mistakenly believe that Satan (known in Islam as Shaytan or Iblis) is a “fallen angel.” Islam powerfully corrects this misconception: Iblis was never an angel; he was from the Jinn.
Before the creation of humans, Iblis was so devoted in his worship that Allah elevated his status, allowing him to reside in the company of the noble angels. However, when Allah created the first man, Adam, and commanded all those present to bow down out of respect for this new creation, Iblis’s true nature was exposed.
He refused the direct command of God out of pure arrogance and racism, claiming he was utterly superior because he was created from fire, while Adam was created from mere clay.
“[Allah] said, ‘What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?’ [Iblis] said, ‘I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.'”
— The Quran (7:12)
Because of this ultimate pride and rebellion, Iblis was cast out of Allah’s mercy. He became the eternal enemy of mankind. Rather than asking for forgiveness like Adam did when he sinned, Iblis asked for respite until the Day of Judgement. He vowed to use his free will to tempt, deceive, and lead humanity away from the straight path.
“[Iblis] said, ‘Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path.'”
— The Quran (7:16)
