Who is Allah?

Who is Allah?

Discovering the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth

The word Allah is the proper name of God in Arabic. It is a unique word that possesses no plural and no gender. It simply and profoundly means “The One True God.”

A common misconception in the West is that “Allah” is a new deity invented by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). In reality, it is the exact same word that Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews use for God today, and have used for centuries before the dawn of Islam.

The Language of the Prophets

If you look at the languages spoken by previous prophets, you will find a striking linguistic family tree pointing to the exact same Creator:

  • Moses (peace be upon him) spoke Hebrew. In the Hebrew Bible, God is referred to as Eloah. The word Elohim, which appears over 2,500 times in the Old Testament, is simply the plural of majesty for Eloah.
  • Jesus (peace be upon him) spoke Aramaic. The Aramaic word for God is Alaha (or Elaha). In the ancient Peshitta Bible, this word is used for God over 1,300 times. Furthermore, Jesus himself is recorded calling out to God using the word Eli or Eloi (“My God”).

All of these ancient Semitic words are linguistic cognates of the Arabic word Allah.

The Concept of God in Islam: Absolute Monotheism

Islam teaches absolute monotheism, known as Tawheed. God is One, indivisible, without partners, parents, or children. He is the Creator, the Sustainer, the Most Merciful, and the All-Knowing.

He is not bound by time or space, and there is absolutely nothing comparable to Him. He does not sleep, nor does He tire. He is completely independent of His creation, while His creation is entirely dependent on Him.

The Quran perfectly summarizes this concept in a short but profoundly heavy chapter that serves as the touchstone of Islamic monotheism:

“Say, ‘He is Allah, [who is] One,
Allah, the Eternal Refuge.
He neither begets nor is born,
Nor is there to Him any equivalent.'”
— The Quran (Surah Al-Ikhlas, 112:1-4)

Another powerful revelation is Ayat al-Kursi (The Throne Verse), widely considered the greatest verse in the Quran for its majestic description of God’s authority:

“Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”
— The Quran (2:255)

Majestic, Yet Intimately Close

While Allah is the Most High and Transcendent, He is not a distant clockmaker who wound up the universe and walked away. He is deeply personal, loving, and unimaginably close to His creation. In fact, every single chapter of the Quran (except one) begins with the phrase: “In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.”

He is intimately aware of our daily struggles, our silent anxieties, and our very existence:

“And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein.
(Quran 50:16)

No matter what you have done in your life, His mercy is vast and encompasses all things. He constantly invites humanity to turn back to Him and speak to Him directly:

“Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'”
(Quran 39:53)

Why Read About Him, When You Can Hear From Him?

The Quran is not just a history book; it is the direct, uncorrupted speech of God to mankind. It is an invitation to know your Creator. Don’t rely on what the media says—read it for yourself and let your heart decide.
